Parliament’s Committee for Section 194 Enquiry looking into suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office will resume today.

It will hear evidence from Sphelo Hamilton Samuel, who was recently reinstated as the head of the public protector’s office in the Free State.

Samuel was subjected to a disciplinary hearing by Mkhwebane in 2020, who charged him with several allegations of misconduct.

The charges followed a letter he had written to Parliament requesting an investigation into the conduct of Mkhwebane as well as pointing out financial mismanagement at the institution.

Meanwhile the Western Cape High Court has reserved judgment in Mkhwebane’s bid to overturn her suspension by president Cyril Ramaphosa.

However the DA’s legal representative, Steven Budlender, has argued that Ramaphosa’s action to suspend Mkhwebane was not bias or retaliation for the Phala Phala probe.
