World Braille Day today again celebrates the birth of the inventor of the language for blind and visually impaired people.
Louis Braille was born on this day in 1809 and developed braille in 1824.
The French educator became blind after an accident in his father’s harness shop when he was only three.
According to reports, his system went unused for many years after his death in 1852 at the age of 43, but it is now used worldwide – virtually unchanged from the 19th century.
