The highly anticipated State of the Nation Address (SONA) this evening is taking place on the 31st anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.

Mandela was released from Robben Island on the 11th February 1946.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the SONA at 7pm, under the theme, ‘’Following up on our commitments: making your future work better”.

It comes at a time when the country is facing the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, with many in the political arena calling on Ramaphosa to table clear plans for the country’s vaccination process.

Parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo, says Parliament has recognised this important day in history, saying this year it coincides with a SONA that will be unlike any other seen before in South Africa.

Mothapo says most of the guest have registered to be part of the address via webinar.

Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise says every South African has their own wish list they hope the president will make come true this evening, adding that she too has her own, and topping her list is a plan for economic stability.

She says aside from assuring the nation of their health amid the COVID-19 pandemic, giving a clear plan as to how the government plans to resuscitate the economy should be at top of his to-do list for 2021.

Modise says a fragile economy has a direct impact on employment, education and the country’s health system.
