Police minister Bheki Cele, says KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Limpopo, North West and the Western Cape are hotspot provinces where learners easily get kidnapped from school.

In a written Parliamentary reply to a question by the DA’s Ntombi Khumalo in Parliament, Cele says more work needs to be done to improve learner safety in these provinces.

Questions were addressed to the minister on interventions undertaken by the police and the Department of Basic Education to deal with the kidnapping of children.

The answer comes as schools are set to open on the 19th for coastal Providences and tomorrow for inland schools.

The minister says awareness campaigns are conducted on an ongoing basis with multidisciplinary investigation teams having been established in the hotspot provinces.
