Teacher unions have applauded the basic education department’s decision to extend contracts of the teacher’s assistant in schools.
More than 300 000 teacher assistants and general assistants are employed under the Presidential Youth Employment Stimulus programme.
The Initiative will now end in this August.
The programme seeks to mitigate the devastating economic challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) Spokesperson Nomusa Cembi says as much as they welcome the extension, however, they want them to be employed permanently.
Meanwhile, National Teachers Union (NATU) General Secretary Cynthia Barnes says assistant teachers are playing a critical role in schools.
