Judge Piet Koen will announce at the end of January whether he will recuse himself from former president Jacob Zuma’s arms deal trial.

Koen postponed the case in the High Court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, saying this will give him a chance to consider his continued involvement.

Yesterday, Koen said there was a necessity to adjudicate on his role in the trial considering a number of developments that had recently taken place.

This happened in the light of Zuma challenging his decision not to recuse the state’s lead prosecutor, Billy Downer, who he claims to be biased against him.

Zuma and French arms manufacturer Thales are facing charges relating to South Africa’s arms deal of the 1990s.
