Judge Hlophe Facing Impeachment?

Written by on 11 April, 2021

The Judicial Service Commission has found Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe guilty of gross misconduct.

The commission’s Judicial Conduct Tribunal has found that Hlophe breached the provision of Section 125 of the Constitution by improperly attempting to influence two Constitutional Court justices to violate their oath of office.

The JSC will now consider the tribunal’s report and its response.

The findings into Hlophe follow a complaint years ago that he tried to improperly influence two Constitutional Court Judges, Bess Nkabinde and Chris Jafta, to rule in favour of then ANC president Jacob Zuma and French arms dealer Thales, in the controversial arms deal case.

The tribunal has recommended that Hlophe should face impeachment.
