The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has called on people residing in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga who are presenting with fever or flu-like symptoms, to test for malaria.
The NICD says many malaria cases are being misdiagnosed as Covid-19.
The institute says malaria and Covid-19 have similar early symptoms including fever, chills, headaches, fatigue and muscle pain. It warns that undiagnosed and untreated malaria progresses to severe illness which can be fatal.
Limpopo, KZN and Mpumalanga are considered South Africa’s malaria-risk areas, as well as people who have travelled to Mozambique in the past six weeks.
