President Cyril Ramaphosa says the declaration of the National State of Disaster empowered government to take the measures that saved countless lives.

Ramaphosa had been addressing the nation on developments in South Africa’s response to the COVID19 pandemic last night.

The decision means that the Coronavirus Alert Levels will no longer apply.

He has announced the end of the National State of Disaster which has been in place for the past 750 days. This announcement means the pandemic will be managed by the National Health Act going forward.

Ramaphosa says the measures were effective in slowing down the rate of infection.

The President says the National State of Disaster also provided the legal basis for the introduction of the special R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant.

He adds that this enabled the provision of relief to small businesses, the extension of the validity of vehicle and drivers licences, and the management of the pandemic in educational institutions.
