KZN Director of Environmental Health, Babongile Mhlongo, says schools with reported cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) have the necessary infrastructure to maintain proper hygiene and help prevent the spread of the virus.

This follows growing concerns over an outbreak of HFMD in the eThekwini district.

Last week, health officials confirmed six cases at primary schools and daycare centres in Umhlanga, Phoenix, and Greenwood Park, located north of Durban.

However, Mhlongo has now confirmed that the number of reported cases has risen to 117.

She added that their teams have engaged with parent organisations, teachers, and principals from the affected schools to ensure effective communication and response strategies.

HFMD is a highly contagious viral infection that commonly affects young children, though it can also affect adults. Symptoms include fever, sores in the mouth, and a rash on the hands and feet. Health authorities are urging parents to be vigilant and ensure that children exhibiting symptoms stay home to prevent further transmission.
