The African National Congress (ANC) Member of the Provincial Legislature Nhlakanipho Ntombela has used the legislature sitting to highlight the plight of people living near improperly maintained landfill sites in KwaZulu-Natal.

Speaking at the legislature debate, Ntombela raised concerns about the gang warfare among litter pickers on the Msunduzi sites that he says has now reached alarming proportions.

Msunduzi Municipality has previously indicated that it’s now looking to rope in the army to address the issue of heavily armed illegal immigrants and waste pickers causing havoc at the New England Road Landfill Site.

Ntombela says it remains a concern that the government seems to lack the capacity to regain control of these sites.
