President Cyril Ramaphosa says the passing into law of three laws that will strengthen existing provisions around gender-based violence is a step in the right direction but is not the solution.

Last week he signed into law the new Criminal and Related Matters Amendment Act, Sexual Offences and Related Matters Amendment Act, and the new Domestic Violence Amendment Act.

In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa says he has repeatedly said survivors of gender-based violence should not be further traumatised by the legal system.

He says these laws must be used to empower and protect women and children and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
