Economist Dante Mashile says the easing of COVID-19 regulations will help grow the country’s economy and also create job opportunities.

The Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the 2021 third quarter show that the number of employed persons decreased by 660 000 in the third quarter of 2021 to 14,3 million.

Yesterday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the country will remain on alert level 1, but has scrapped some restrictions including that of mandatory mask-wearing outdoors and gatherings for social events.

All venues can now fill to 50% of their capacity, as long as people prove either that they’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19 or had a negative diagnosis. If not, the existing restrictions on venues remain in place.

Mashile says South Africa’s economy is under a lot strain.
