Mabuza Assures SOEs Won’t be Privatised

Deputy President David Mabuza says there government has no intention to privatise the generation of energy.

Mabuza has been answering questions in a virtual session of the National Council of Provinces, as part of Executive accountability to the Legislature.

The EFF has asked Mabuza if he thinks the recent statement by CEO Andre de Ruyter, which publicly supported the opening up the power utility to competition was detrimental.

Wighing in on the damage that took place at the Medupi Power Station Unit 4, Mbuza says he was advised that the generator failed incident that occurred on the 8 August 2021 has been classified as a very major event.

The power utility recently announced looming load shedding because low capacity in power generation.

He says however, an investigation team comprising of Eskom and experts and the original equipment manufacturer that has been appointed by the power utility to determine the root-cause and the full extent of the damage caused.
