Mabuza Says Privatising Eskom Is Not An Option

Deputy President David Mabuza has told parliamentarians that Eskom will not be privatised.

Responding to a question in the National Assembly, Mabuza said the government’s policy position is that privatisation is not the answer to providing better solutions to the current problems facing the power utility.

In 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Eskom will be remodelled and split into three state-owned entities dealing with generation, transmission and distribution.

The power utility is deep in a financial and operational crisis, with a debt burden of R419 billion, which it is unable to service from the revenue it earns.

Mabuza says the power utility is currently in an advanced stage of the process of unbundling.
