Gagasi FM Sports specialist and football agent Mike Makaab has commented on Vusumuzi Vilakazi’s new role at AmaZulu FC. Vilakazi was appointed as AmaZulu FC’s Dstv Diski Challenge head coach for the 2024/25 season, 11 days after parting ways with Richards Bay FC.
Vilakazi led the Natal Rich Boyz to winning the PSL Promotional play-offs and retained their top flight status, however, the 41-year old could not agree terms for a new contract and parted ways with the KZN outfit, and the club has since replaced him with Brandon Truter.
Kanu spent five years as reserve team coach at Lamontville Golden Arrows before getting promoted into the first team to work as assistant coach and later co-coach alongside Mabhuti Khenyeza. He also had stints with Chippa United before joining the Natal Rich Boyz last season, and will bring a wealth of experience to the AmaZulu reserve team. Speaking on extratime on Gagasi FM, Mike Makaab says Kanu will not only be responsible for coaching Usuthu’s DDC team, he will also be responsible for the transition of players from the reserve team into the first team.
“I met with Pedro Diaz the Sporting director (AmaZulu FC), we had a number of discussions and the most important thing that I relayed to him was that the project had to be of interest to Kanu,” said Makaab.
“After Kanu and myself had spoken to the club we had heard what plans they had in terms of the DDC team. Kanu’s role is more than just being DDC coach, he needs to manage the transition of players from the DDC into the senior team, which is a very important aspect of any football club, because often we find that players are taken from the DDC team straight into the senior team and they are not quite prepared for the pace of the game, the mental intensity of the game, the physicality of the game, and that is what AmaZulu are hoping can be addressed in the right way. It’s a very interesting project for Kanu, so we are super excited.”
