Mamelodi Sundowns have taken a major step toward the semifinals of the CAF Champions League after they defeated Algerian hosts CR Belouizdad 4-1 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.
A brace by Namibian hitman Peter Shalulile, who scored his 100th top-flight goal, and goals from Neo Maema and Cassius Mailula gave the Brazilians an advantage going into the quarterfinal second leg at Loftus.
The win was also crucial for it was Sundowns to win as it was their first victory in four games across all competitions. Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena has dismissed suggestions that they are as good as through to the Caf Champions League semifinals. The aggregate winners will face either Simba SC (Tanzania) or Wydad Casablanca (Morocco) in the semifinals.
The Brazilians play Richards Bay in the PSL assignment before playing the Algerians in the second leg of the quarter-final next weekend.
