Minerals Resources and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe, says coal will remain with South Africa for many many years to come.
The minister had been speaking at the Africa Energy Indaba that started yesterday in Cape Town.
His speech was interrupted by a small group of Greenpeace demonstrators who stood in front of the stage with anti-coal placards, calling for an end to the use of coal for energy, saying it’s a formula for corruption
and high pollution.
Mantashe says the transition to lower carbon emissions had to be just and not leave out communities that are solely dependent on coal for survival.
