Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has vowed to tackle the illegal mining crisis in the country.

He says he will be engaging with the Minerals Council, as well as other stakeholders, to address the issue and implement strategies aimed at curbing illegal mining activities. These efforts are part of a broader plan to tackle the growing crisis in the sector.

The crackdown on illegal miners in the country has led to thousands of arrests at various sites. The most recent operation resulted in 12 suspects being apprehended in the Free State last Saturday. This follows a series of similar arrests across the country, highlighting the scale of illegal mining activities, which continue to thrive despite law enforcement efforts.

While addressing the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources yesterday, Mantashe expressed his deep concern about the dangers posed by illegal mining, particularly its negative impact on the economy and surrounding communities.

Illegal mining has been linked to environmental degradation, safety risks for both miners and residents, and the loss of potential revenue for the government.

Mantashe emphasised that finding sustainable solutions will require collaboration across various sectors, including law enforcement, local communities, and the mining industry. He called for a multifaceted approach to reduce the prevalence of illegal mining, which he described as a significant threat to both the economy and social stability.
