Mashaba announces resignation as Johannesburg mayor

Johannesburg mayor, Herman Mashaba, has resigned both as member of the Democratic Alliance and mayor of the city.
Speaking at a media briefing, Mashaba says his resignation will be effective from the 27th of next month.
His resignation follows the appointment of the party’s former leader, Hellen Zille, as the chair of the Federal council.
Mashaba had said earlier that he would leave the party if it was taken over by what he described as right-wing elements.
