Poet and activist the late Maya Angelou has made history by becoming the first Black woman to appear on the US quarter.

Unveiled by the US Mint on Monday, Angelo will also be the first figure commemorated through the American Women Quarters Programme signed into law in January 2021.

Angelou, who rose to international prominence as a writer known for her frank chronicles of personal history and honeyed voice, died in 2014 after suffering from heart complications.

Mint Deputy Director Ventris Gibson says each of the 2022 quarters are designed to reflect the depth of accomplishments being celebrated throughout this historic coin programme as well as to celebrate the contributions of some of America’s most phenomenal women.
