Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has expressed grave concern over the high rates of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.
She asserts that the situation for women in the country is alarmingly perilous, even more so than in war-torn regions.
During the final three months of the previous year, there were 285 child murders and 1,135 murders of women.
Additionally, 18,474 women and 2,281 children were violently assaulted in the same period.
The department’s spokesperson, Cassius Selala, reports that Minister Chikunga is urging men to take a leading role in the movement to end gender-based violence and femicide.
