National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise says sometimes instituting accountability measures takes time because politics get in the way.
Modise has been testifying at the Zondo Commission of inquiry into state capture on parliamentary oversight evidence.
The speaker was asked if the Gupta leaks articles in the media are what prompted a parliamentary inquiry into allegations of state capture and why Parliament had to wait for media reports on the Gupta leaks.
Responding to Advocate Alec Freund’s question, Modise says sometimes when allegations come out, they are never never sure if they are worth looking into because people making them could be playing politics.

on the controversial Nkandla Gate, Modise says the ruling on the upgrade issue has helped in improving the oversight work that is conducted by parliamentary committees.
The country’s highest court in the land, the ConCourt, ruled in 2016 that Parliament was in breach of its constitutional mandate when it failed to act on the Public Protector’s report regarding the non-security upgrades done on former President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home.
On this issue, Modise has this response for commission chair Raymond Zondo.
