The African National Congress (ANC) Provincial secretary, Bheki Mtolo, says while load shedding is a problem in the country, some South Africans are better off now than they were under the apartheid government.

He’s been briefing the media in Durban on the outcomes of the provincial executive committee meeting.

The country is enduring the worst bout of load-shedding since Eskom introduced rolling blackouts more than 15 years ago, with some areas going without electricity for up to 10 hours in total a day under stage six.

Last week, Eskom chairperson Mpho Makwena announced that in order for the power utility to execute its turnaround plan, it will require some level of permanent load shedding at stage 2 or stage 3 for at least two years so that critical maintenance can be done on power stations.
