Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, has confirmed that schools will re-open on the 19th of July after the winter holidays were brought forward by more than a month.

On Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that schools will close from Wednesday and no learners will be permitted in hostels after 12:30 on Friday.

Motshekga says schools will close for learners on Wednesday and for teachers on Friday.

“Learners in public and independent or private schools should be released for winter vacation on Wednesday, 30 June 2021. Public schools will come back from the winter vacation early, on 19 July 2021, instead of 26 July 2021; as it was originally scheduled in the 2021 School Calendar,” explains Ramaphosa.

According to Motshekga, more than 200 000 educators in the country have already been vaccinated and has urged others to go for their jabs so that all will be inoculated by next Wednesday.

“The Sector has a target of 582 564 personnel who are eligible to receive the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The Department of Health has assured us that additional doses will be made available in parts of the country, where the allocations have already been depleted as a result of the progress of the programme,” says Motshekga.

Motshekga adds that the vaccination for teachers will continue even after the schools have closed.
