Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi is bracing for a fiercely contested Soweto Derby when his side faces Kaizer Chiefs in a sold-out Betway Premiership clash at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

A victory for the Buccaneers would see them close the gap on log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns to just three points, but Ncikazi acknowledges the challenge ahead, particularly with fatigue potentially playing a role. Pirates have played 27 matches this season, compared to Chiefs’ 17, a disparity he hopes won’t affect the outcome.

“Saturday’s match is massive—one of the biggest fixtures in the South African football calendar, if not the entire continent,” Ncikazi said. “We have prepared well, and as always, we want to win. However, these games are never easy, and history does not determine the outcome.”

The assistant coach also praised the club’s sports science department for ensuring the players are in top condition despite their demanding schedule.

“Our science team has worked hard on recovery, analyzing data, and making sure we are ready. We will go into the match fully prepared, and hopefully, we can deliver a strong performance and get the result.”

While Kaizer Chiefs pose a significant challenge, Ncikazi remains focused on securing maximum points rather than speculating on where the result might place Pirates in the title race.

“For us, Chiefs are just another opponent standing in the way of points we need. Our goal is to go there and win. Where those points take us is something that will be determined later,” he concluded.

With both teams eager for victory, the stage is set for another thrilling Soweto Derby in front of a packed FNB Stadium.
