New COVID-19 Variant More Lethal – Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the rapid spread of the Covid-19 Delta variant is of major concern.

This as the country has moved to level four lockdown following the increase in COVID-19 cases.

The variant has now been detected in five provinces – the Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and Western Cape.

In his address to the nation, Ramaphosa says the evidence they have is that the Delta variant is rapidly displacing the Beta variant.

He has also defended the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), saying throughout this pandemic, the national response has been led by dedicated medical professionals, healthcare workers, and scientists.

This comment follows the EFF’s march to SAHPRA offices in Pretoria last Friday, demanding speedy provision of COVID-19 vaccines to South Africans.

The party is accusing government of refusing to authorise the usage of Sputnik-V vaccine from Russia and China’s Sinovac.
