Former Minister Nosiviwe Maposa-Nqakula has been elected as the new National Assembly Speaker.
This move follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recent cabinet reshuffle, deploying the Mapisa-Nqakula’s predecessor, Thandi Modise in the executive.
Mapisa-Nqakula succeeds Modise, who is now the minister of Defence and Millitary Veterans.
She received 199 votes while Democratic Alliance nominee Annelie Lotriet received 82 votes. The ruling party has 233 seats in parliaments which makes it the party with the majority vote.
The election process was held via the secret ballot method, following DA’s nomination of Annelie Lotriet.
Mapisa-Nqankula has particularly thanked all former three heads of state for the support they’ve shown her throughout her political career as well.
