NFP Secretary General, Cannan Mdletshe, says they support Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s decision not to step aside amid allegations of corruption levelled against him.

Mkhize has been widely criticised, following an exposé by the Daily Maverick that his close associates and other third parties allegedly pocketed R82 million in questionable payments from the R150 million COVID-19 and National Health Insurance communications contract.

Digital Vibes a company owned by his former private assistant, Tahera Mather, and former spokesperson, Naardhira Mitha charged the department millions of rands to schedule Mkhize’s media briefings during the pandemic.

However, the minister in a media briefing said the transaction in question was not irregular as there was a contract already in place.

Mdletshe says it would be a major blow in the fight against COVID-19, if Mkhize were to step aside.
