Metalworkers union NUMSA says it felt it was time to reach an agreement with the bargaining council.

The union’s strike action has taken eight days with its representatives finally agreeing on the employers’ final offer of a 6% wage increase.

The national strike has cost the steel and engineering sector a loss of around R600 million in profit.

Numsa accepted the wage offer of six-percent on behalf of workers yesterday, and announced the strike has ended, with operations expected to resume today.

Numsa’s Irvin Jim says it is disheartening that workers are forced to strike every time they ask for their due salary increase.
