Nzimande disputes claims NSFAS will write off student debt

Written by on 10 June, 2020

Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, says claims that NSFAS will write off billions of student debts are factually incorrect and irresponsible.

Nzimande had been briefing media on progress in the implementation of Covid-19 measures in Pretoria.

Last week the Democratic Alliance made allegations that NSFAS is planning to write off more than R1.9 Billion historic debts from 2016 and 2017.

Nzimande says the money spoken about is the irregular expenditure that arose when the previous board applied unspent historic debt from 2016 and 2017 to fund NSFAS qualifying students in 2018.

Nzimande also says students who live in private rented accommodation close to campuses may return provided physical distancing arrangements are in place.

Under Level 3, 33% of the student population will be allowed to return to campuses, delivery sites and residences on condition that they can be safely accommodated and supported in line with the health and safety protocols as directed by the Department.
