Preliminary analysis has shown that the Omicron variant is spreading rapidly, in a similar manner as the Delta Variant.
Scientists say that since the discovery of this variant in the country, it has shown rapid transmission within communities, a similar trend to that of Delta.
The Delta variant is responsible for driving South Africa’s third wave of cases and is behind the surge in cases in a number of countries worldwide.
SA has recorded 6381 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, with the majority of new cases recorded in Gauteng, KZN and the Western Cape.
It is not yet clear whether Omicron will overtake Delta as the predominant variant.
