Over 40 Million Citizens Targeted in COVID-19 Phased Vaccine Rollout

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says government is targeting a minimum of 67% of the population to achieve herd immunity during a phased rollout approach of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Mkhize says this during a briefing on Sunday evening, where he presented South Africa’s vaccine rollout strategy, and announced that the country’s first batch will become available soon.

“At this stage we have secured the doses that will be acquired through COVAX which will ensure that we immunize 10% of the population through this mechanism and, in line with President’s statement, we expect the processes will have delivered the vac-cine by beginning of second quarter,” says Mkhize.

According to the minister, funds to pay the outstanding amount of around R1.8 billion, following a deposit that was made by the Solidarity Fund, has been allocated.
