Parties Lock Horns Over Reopening IEC Candidates Registration

The South African Communist Party (SACP) says it supports the ANC’s bid to have the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) reopen candidate list registration for one day.

The ANC claims it experienced technical glitches when it was submitting its candidates, missing the deadline to register candidates in at least 30 municipalities countrywide.

SACP General-Secretary Blade Nzimande says they want to see free and fair local government elections.

Meanwhile, the DA says reopening the submission of candidates for the local government elections would violate the principle of free and fair elections.

The DA along with several other opposition parties, is opposed to the ANC’s Electoral Court bid, as Werner Horn elaborates,
