The South African Petroleum Industry Association says the country is running out of fuel due to the impact of the coronavirus and major financial losses.
It says fuel rationing is being implemented to manage the demand and preserve the current stock.
The association says following the opening of the economy during level 4 of the national lockdown there has been a dramatic increase in demand for diesel.
It says the fuel shortage is expected to last until next week while both refineries in Durban are currently starting up and on specific fuel production.
