Hearings into the murder of 33 people in Phoenix, north of Durban, are continuing at the South African Human Rights Commission.

The killings happened during the fateful week of the July unrest in KZN and Gauteng.

The aim of the commission is to look into the causes of the unrest, the alleged racially motivated attacks and killings, and the apparent lapses in law enforcement agencies at the time.

One of the witnesses before the HRC, Ntethelelo Mkhize says he has no faith in the criminal justice system anymore.

For the past 3 days the commission has heard from residents of Kwamashu, Ntuzuma and INanda on how they were tortured and narrowly escaped death from Indian men who had set up illegal roadblocks in Phoenix.

Mkhize who spent 2 months in a coma says the race issue must never be swept under the carpet.
