Renowned South African coach Pitso Mosimane has officially parted ways with Iranian giants Esteghlal FC due to prolonged salary disputes, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure at the club.
Despite leading Esteghlal to crucial victories and securing their place in the next round of the Iranian Cup, Mosimane and his technical team—Maahier Davids, Musi Matlaba, Kabelo Rangoaga, and Kyle Solomon—found themselves in a frustrating financial standoff, with over two months’ salaries left unpaid.
His management team, MT Sports Marketing & Management, confirmed that multiple attempts were made to resolve the issue, dating back to discussions with Esteghlal’s former CEO last year. A formal default notice was submitted on January 1, 2025, followed by a FIFA-sanctioned 15-day grace period. However, the new club leadership failed to meet their own deadlines, leaving the matter unresolved.
Mosimane’s time at the club was not without success. Under his guidance, Esteghlal lost only three of their ten Persian Gulf Pro League fixtures, while also holding Saudi powerhouse Al Ahli FC to a memorable draw in the AFC Champions League. However, financial instability overshadowed his achievements, forcing an unfortunate exit.
The legendary coach expressed gratitude to the Esteghlal players and passionate fan base, who remained a source of motivation throughout his tenure. Now, as he departs Tehran, Mosimane is expected to explore fresh opportunities, with his reputation as one of Africa’s finest tacticians firmly intact.
Meanwhile, Esteghlal FC, currently 11th on the league table, faces an uncertain future as they attempt to stabilize both on and off the field.
