The Sharks secured an impressive 42-22 win over Cardiff at Arms Park on Saturday, with head coach John Plumtree crediting his impact players for sealing the result.

The visitors looked dominant, leading 28-10 early in the second half after hooker Bongi Mbonambi crossed the line for his second try. However, Cardiff responded with two quick tries, reducing the deficit to just six points with 20 minutes remaining.

Despite the hosts’ resurgence, the Sharks extinguished their comeback hopes with two late tries to secure the win. Reflecting on the performance, Plumtree expressed his satisfaction with the result. “Cardiff were excellent, playing some great attacking rugby that really tested our defence,” he said.

The Sharks faced early challenges when flank Manu Tshituka and No. 8 Nick Hatton were forced off, placing added pressure on the forwards. Plumtree was particularly impressed with lock Deon Slabbert, who made a strong impact off the bench despite only recently joining the squad. He also praised Jason Jenkins for adjusting well in the lineouts.

“The key moment was in the last 15 minutes when we brought on our impact players, and they closed out the game brilliantly,” Plumtree added. “The front row was outstanding, and Lukhanyo [Am], Swys [Francois Venter], and Jaden [Hendrikse] made a real difference.”

Plumtree was especially pleased with how his team finished the game. “I loved the way we sealed it with those two late tries. It could have gone either way, but we took control.”

With the Six Nations approaching, the Sharks will have a short break before resuming their URC campaign against the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus on 15 February.

“The boys have earned a well-deserved rest, and we look forward to getting back into it,” Plumtree concluded.
