Political parties have welcomed the 500-billion-rand COVID-19 social and economic stimulus package announced by president, Cyril Ramaphosa.
Much of the funding has been allocated towards propping up businesses, subsidising wages and creating jobs.
ANC secretary-general, Ace Magashule, says they are happy that the package is all-inclusive.
“What is important in what the president has said is that we are going to create an inclusive economy where those people living in informal settlements, people without water and those who are unemployed will be catered for. The fact that the president is introducing, for now, the basic minimum income grant is quite an achievement for our people in South Africa, especially the poor and the working class.”
Meanwhile DA interim leader, John Steenhuisen, says the package will bring much-needed relief to millions of South Africans.
He adds that the president has the party’s support both in rolling out the interventions and in longer-term economic reforms.
“Its great to hear the president willing to be approaching the International Monetary Fund, the IMF, this is all very very good news because it means we wont have to dip into private pension funds, the hundred billion injection into front line healthcare in South Africa is absolutely the right decision to be making. So certainly we are very supportive of the president.”
