Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, has stated that extortion is one of the emerging crime trends in the country that significantly hampers economic growth.
The committee is conducting an oversight visit this week to KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape to assess the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) response to extortion and the overall response to crime in these two provinces.
Both KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape have experienced a number of mass murders, including the killing of 18 people in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape and the murder of eight people in Inanda and Ntuzuma, north of Durban.
Speaking to the public broadcaster, Cameron explained that part of the oversight engagements will focus on assessing SAPS’s use of intelligence and its collaboration with communities to combat crime.
