PSA warns that state departments are not ready for work

The Public Servants Association warns that state departments are not ready for employees to return to work.

The union, with 240 000 members, accuses government departments of not complying with Covid-19 safety regulations.

PSA spokesperson, Reuben Maleka, says the union has been flooded with calls from concerned members, adding that some employers are even threatening workers should they fail to report for duty.

Meanwhile the Budget Justice Coalition says government’s Covid-19 economic measures focus less on human rights and more on the protection of businesses.

Millions of South Africans are expected to join the ranks of the hungry and destitute because of job losses and restrictions placed on the informal market.

The chairperson of the coalition, Zukiswa Kota, says government must prioritise resources to support health care, livelihoods and access to food.
