President Cyril Ramaphosa says the closure of schools and other educational institutions for the winter holidays will be brought forward  as the country battles to curb the rise of new Coronavirus infections.

Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday night on developments in the country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Schools have also been affected by COVID-19 cases with Gauteng recording 4,700 cases in its schools as infections continue to rise.

The schools were supposed to close on July 9 to 26 for the winter season.

Ramaphosa says schools will start closing from this Wednesday, the 30th of June, and all will be expected to be closed by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, political parties have voiced strong reactions to South Africa moving to lockdown level four.

The ANC says the latest restrictions announced by the president are necessary to flatten the curve.
