ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa says the decision to re-open candidate registration is in line with constitutional and legislative prescripts.
He had been addressing the closing of the ruling party’s NEC Lekgotla meeting.
Yesterday, the IEC reopened the process to register candidates for the upcoming local government elections, throwing the ANC a lifeline in dozens of municipalities where it had missed a previous cut-off date for registrations and drawing sharp criticism from opposition parties.
Voter registration is expected to take place on 18 and 19 September.
Ramaphosa says they agree with the IEC that there is an inextricable link between voter registration and the right to stand for public office.

Ramaphosa also has applauded Correctional Services Commissioner Arthur Fraser’s decision to release former president Jacob Zuma on medical parole.
Last week, the department of correctional services confirmed the former president would serve the remainder of his 15 month sentence at home given his ill-health.
He was admitted to hospital after his incarceration for a routine check-up.
The Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma for contempt of court after he refused to testify before the commission of inquiry investigating allegation of state capture.
Ramaphosa says the ANC wishes him a speedy recovery.
