President Cyril Ramaphosa has used the commemoration of Armed Forces Day to officially launch of Project Owethu to provide access to healthcare and other social services in communities of KwaZulu-Natal.

The president delivered the keynote address at the event held in Richards Bay, on the KZN north coast.

The annual commemoration highlights the death of over 600 black South African troops who died on the SS Mendi when it collided with the steamship, Darro in the English Channel.

The soldiers were en route to the First World War in France.

Ramaphosa says Project Owethu will be a great catalyst for change in KZN communities.
