President Cyril Ramaphosa has just signed the Cyber crimes Bill into law.
The bill among others criminalises the disclosure of data messages that are harmful.
Examples of such messages include those that incite violence or damage to property.
A spokesperson for law firm Werksman Attorneys, Ahmor Burger-Smidt, says a person who is convicted of an offense under the act is liable to a fine or imprisonment for a period of up to fifteen years.
She believes the bill comes at a crucial time, with many people working remotely.
