Ronwen Williams nominated at Ballon D’Or awards

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has been nominated at the Ballon D’Or awards for the Lev Yashin award, hosted by France Football and Uefa, which recognises the best goalkeeper in World football. Williams has been short listed among 10 goalkeepers including Diogo Costa (FC Porto/Portugal), Gianluigi Donnarumma (PSG/Italy) Gregor Kobel (Borrusia Dortmund/Switzerland), Andrei Lunine (Real Madrid/Ukraine) Mike Maignan (AC Milan/France), Girogi Mamardachvili (Liverpool/Georgia) Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa/Argentina), Unai Simon (Athletic Bilbao/Spain) and Yann Sommer (Inter Milan/Switzerland). 

The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns shot stopper has been recognised for his heroics at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as he helped Sourh Africa to a bronze medal finish, keeping 5 clean sheets with 6 penalty saves. He is the first South African goalkeeper to be nominated for the prestigious award.
