SACP General Secretary Solly Mapaila says their decision to independently contest the 2026 local elections should not be viewed as an attempt to weaken the ANC and the alliance.
Mapaila was speaking at the 30th commemoration of the passing of former SACP General Secretary Joe Slovo in Soweto on Monday.
The ANC lost its outright majority for the first time, a devastating blow for the party once led by Nelson Mandela and has dominated South African politics since winning the first post-apartheid elections 30 years ago. However, its support declined to 40 per cent in last year’s elections, down from 57 per cent in 2019.
This resulted in the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU), comprising the ANC, DA, and other smaller parties in Parliament.
The SACP has expressed dissatisfaction with the African National Congress’s decision to form a coalition with the Democratic Alliance in government following the May 29 elections.
Mapaila says the SACP’s exercise of its independence will pave the way for transformative, working-class-led local governance.
