The South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has welcomed the beginning of the 2023 academic year as inland schools have opened their doors to learners today.

The union wishes to see effective teaching and learning taking place on the first day of school.

This remains elusive as many learners sit at home for weeks not accessing schooling due to complicated late registrations, and admissions processes.

Sadtu’s general secretary, Mugwena Maluleke says the introduction of the online application system in some provinces, like Gauteng, Western Cape, and Northern Cape has not elevated the problem.
