SAFTU Rejects Renewable Energy Tender Bidders

The South African Federation of Trade Unions(SAFTU) has rejected what it calls the commodification of the country’s energy provision by the government.

This follows Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe’s announcement that 25 Preferred Bidder Projects have been appointed to produce renewable energy for the country.

Mantashe says the independent power producers will supply wind and solar energy.

Saftu’s Trevor Shaku says the programme was earlier amplified by former president Jacob Zuma and his Eskom leadership.

Shaku adds that once private capital captures energy provision, it will be far harder to impose cross-subsidisation.
