Police Minister Bheki Cele has expressed elation over the vaccination rollout for police officers.

Cele and National Commissioner Khehla Sitole are leading the police’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Soweto, Gauteng.

The Department of Health plans to immaculate over 180,000 police members at 108 registered sites across the country. The first group will get vaccinated today, while the rest of the police staff’s vaccination will commence on Wednesday.

Cele and Sitole were also among the first to be vaccinated today in this campaign.

He says when police are protected, they are able to protect South Africans.

Meanwhile, Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) in KwaZulu-Natal has applauded the Department of Health for launching the campaign targeting the country’s police officers.

Over 30,000 infections and 680 fatalities have been reported to date.

POPCRU Provincial Chairperson, Jeff Dladla, says vaccination brings relief, in that those who would be infected after being vaccinated won’t have as severe implications as those who would not have been.
